market positioning: the netflix-for-filmmakers thought experiment

dictated, unscripted. lightly cleaned up. highlighted parts were extended by my editor-in-silicon and approved by me.

one thing i see founders struggling with a lot is market positioning. they keep placing their products incorrectly. simple example: say you built an app like netflix — browse any movie, any series, anything ever uploaded to the internet. how would you release it?

most people would release it to students at ₹1000 or ₹2000 a year. a better positioning for the same product: release it to filmmakers, since your platform lets them download the 4k — a 52 gb file. a filmmaker appreciates a 52 gb file. a normal person hates it.

market positioning matters because that one feature lets you push the price to ₹2000 a month. how do you get your first users? you've locked filmmakers as the audience — so find the websites where filmmakers pay for movie recommendations. yes, filmmakers literally pay to get recommended what to watch. that guy is already paying for recommendations, probably can't find the movies from the list, and is tired of piracy telegram. sell it to him for ₹2000.

and how do you reach him? dm him. filmmakers have incredibly few followers on instagram and they reply fast. they aren't influencers, they aren't famous — they will reply to a simple instagram dm.

market positioning and gtm is something that can really be worked on. same app. 20x the price. all positioning.
